Please watch this documentary, “The Dog Meat Professionals: South Korea”... Y. We ask you to take immediate action to crack down on the illegal dog farms, slaughterhouses, markets and restaurants that serve dog meat in your District. We request that an official document be issued, mandating that the following existing Korean laws be enforced by its government officials, police and judges: Unauthorized processing of food waste fed to dogs in the meat trade is a violation of the Wastes Control Act, Article 15-2, Article 25, Section 3. Suppliers of food waste and transporters of food waste to dog meat farms are violating this regulation. Food waste fed to dogs in the dog meat trade is a violation of the Control of Livestock and Fish Feed Act, Article 14, Section 1 & 2. Unauthorized collection of food waste and the act of feeding it to dogs in the meat trade is in violation of this regulation. Excrement and resulting environmental damage produced as a by-product of the illegal dog meat farm is a violation of the Act on the Management and Use of Livestock Excreta Article 11. The excrement produced at dog meat farms causes environmental damage to the immediate and surrounding area. The act of the slaughtering of dogs for human consumption is a violation of the Animal Protection Act Article 8, Section 1, Clause 4. The act of the slaughtering of a dog, without justifiable ground – such as out of necessity for veterinary treatment, or in circumstances of immediate threat, harm or damage to human life or property, is a violation. The slaughter of dogs by electrocution is a violation of the Animal Protection Act, Article 8, Section 1, Clause 1. Inflicting injury or death to any animal by the following means: battery by tools, exposure to drugs, exposure to extreme heat or fire, electrocution and drowning is subject to legal punishment. Therefore, the routine slaughter of dogs by butchers and farmers by these methods is in violation of the Act. Further, electrocution as a method of slaughter is internationally recognized as an inherently cruel method of slaughter and banned globally. The slaughter of dogs from an unauthorized slaughterhouse is a violation of Livestock Products Sanitary Control Act, Article 7 Section 1. The Livestock Products Sanitary Control Act, states that dogs are officially recognized and classified as “animals” that are “prohibited from being slaughtered and distributed as food for human consumption”. Therefore, those vendors operating dog slaughterhouses are operating outside of the parameters of the law and in violation of the law. The slaughter of dogs for his/her own consumption is a violation of the Animal Protection Act, Article 10. The intent of the Act is to ensure that no animal is slaughtered in a cruel or revolting manner, and shall be free from unnecessary pain, fear, or stress during the process of slaughter. Therefore, the only humane way of slaughtering dogs would be by euthanasia (lethal injection). All currently practiced methods of slaughter by butchers, farmers and traders excludes euthanasia as a method of slaughter, therefore they are all in breach of this Act. This is also a violation of the Livestock Products Sanitary Control Act Article 7 Section 1 Clause 2. According to the Livestock Products Sanitary Control Act, the slaughter of animals for his/her own consumption is allowed only for the livestock animals that are publically announced as classification of livestock in the Livestock Products Sanitary Control Act and dogs are not classified here. The display and sale of dog carcasses in traditional outdoor markets is a violation of the Food Sanitation Act, Article 4, 5. Violation of laws banning the sale of harmful food due to the contamination from unsanitary and illegal slaughter of the animal and display of the dog carcass. For example, dog carcasses are routinely contaminated by microorganisms that cause human diseases and food poisoning; this can lead to serious and life threatening health complications. There are also strict laws that ban the sale of meat from sick animals, due to the fact that there is no quality control or formal monitoring of slaughter practices in the dog meat trade it is very likely that violation of these laws is happening routinely. Dog meat restaurants’ sale of dog meat soup made with dog carcasses from an unknown source is a violation of Food Sanitation Act Article 44 Section 1 Clause 1. Uninspected livestock products must not be transported, stored, displayed, sold or used for manufacturing or processing of food for human consumption. Once, my friends’ husband here in the UK was showing a South Korean business contact a photograph of their gorgeous German Shepherd. Instead of the usual ‘oh what a beautiful dog’ he expected, the Korean business man said ‘Mmmmm he looks tasty. ’ Whereas it is often said that eating dogs is the domain of the elderly Koreans, this example show that it is more complicated and not so easy to define. To satisfy the tastes of Koreans who choose to eat dog, there are millions of dogs living in horrendous conditions, here are some of the statistics: The actual numbers of dogs and farms are difficult to quantify because there are tens of thousands of small ‘independent’ dog meat farms. There are between 14, 000 and 17, 000 dog meat farms In these  farms it is often reported that there are between 2 million and 2. 5 million dogs. However, in 2018 Mr. Pyo Chang Won, the chairman of the Animal Welfare Committee at the National Assembly of Korea,  puts the estimated number of dogs at 3 million These millions of dogs will be eaten every year! So next year another 2. 5 to 3 million dogs will also die To get a sense of the size of this, 3 million dogs is equivalent to the combined population of Manchester and Sheffield. With a population of 52 million people in South Korea, there is one dog living in horrendous conditions in a dog meat farm for every 17 people. Culturally, where people live in houses rather than high-rise blocks, it is usual for people to have a pet dog and a meat dog. The pet dog gets to live in the home and the meat dog lives outside, often in a solitary situation. In the summer the South Koreans have a festival called Boknal. But, people eat Dogs all the time in Korea, there are many dog meat restaurants in South Korea, businessmen and locals can be seen eating dog ‘alfresco’ chatting easily as they eat. Boknal is a specific festival that takes place in the summer and many people and dog meat farmers breed dogs for that specific time. The popular Dog Meat dishes on the menu are: Dishes that dogs are turned into Koreans have eaten dogs for centuries and the national dishes made from dogs include: Bosintang – Dog meat is boiled with fresh vegetables with herbs Gaegogi Jeongol – A dog stew made in a large Jeongol pan. Gae Suyuk – Boiled dog meat Gaegogi Muchim – Steamed dog meat, Korean leeks ( 부추), and vegetables mixed with spices Gaesoju – Mixed drink containing dog meat and other Chinese medicine ingredients such as ginger, chestnut, and jujube to invigorate one’s health Slices of Dog Meat What kind of dogs are eaten? Many breeds are used in this horrific trade and we in the UK recognise our beloved pet dogs in the list, including: Golden retrievers Spaniels Labradors Malamutes Akitas Large hound breeds What about  cats? When I was in South Korea in June and October 2017, I was told that there wasn’t a problem with cats in South Korea, but I have since found out that there is a problem. Cats are often boiled alive and then distilled down into and elixir called Cat Soju ( goyangi soju). Cats are also sometimes added to the dog meat soups because they are cheaper than dogs. Smaller Breed Dogs There is an explosion of small dogs as pets in South Korea and we are discovering that this situation exacerbates the Dog Meat Trade. Puppies are bought, then as they grow and become more difficult to handle/train, they are handed over to shelters that can often supply the dog meat trade. In our experience there is a lack of understanding of the behaviours of dogs. There are few training companies in South Korea who are working to train the new owners. Whilst I was in Korea in June 2017, I ran a day of training at one of the companies and they were well informed and had good skills too. They were very interested in training using positive reinforcement. The scale of the problem however is huge, and it requires people to be motivated to learn. Once the cute puppy has grown, large numbers of people surrender both their large and small breed pets to the dog meat farms, just handing them over to be eaten or as I have been told by rescuers in South Korea, the owners offer the small breed dogs to be fed to the larger dogs. Small dogs do find their way into the Dog Meat Trade. They can be boiled alive to make what is believed to be a restorative elixir. The living conditions for the dogs in the meat farms The dogs live in unsanitary conditions. The dog meat farms are made up of makeshift structures, wire cages stacked on top of one another, or scrap wood made into cells where dogs live the whole of their lives. They are filthy squalid conditions which no animal should be forced to live in. For an intelligent animal, this is a cruel existence. No exercise, no connection with people, no safety and no relief from the elements, they are hot in summer and cold in winter, no beds, blankets, or coats. Often the dogs witness the torture and death of their family members and kennel mates. I have worked with rescued dogs in South Korea and many of them are skittish and fearful of people, something that is not natural to the way dogs have evolved to live alongside people. The Festival of Boknal (also known as Sambok) Boknal takes place over a month and within that month, here are three important dates. Koreans believe that when the weather is very hot, the body needs nutritious food.  They believe that you can counter act the heat of the summer with the heat of a soup. Samgyetang is ginseng soup made with chicken, but often the chicken is substituted with Dog Meat or Koreans chose instead to eat boshintang. Methods of killing The methods of killing dogs for consumption in Korea include, electrocution, hanging, boiling dogs alive, blow torching and therefore burning them to death. In a country that has fast become a world leader in the development and manufacture of technology, the method of death for these dogs is brutal, dirty, prolonged and painful. As you think about the way in which these animals are killed, bear in mind some statistics. Statistically, 166 dogs are killed for every new Kia car sold in the UK. So, when you next see a Kia on the road next perhaps you can think about that statistic. It is shocking and it  they amount to 18000 units sold per year. Rescue Organisations There are some good people in South Korea who are doing what they can to rescue the dogs and get them across to the UK, US and Canada. Some of these people work as individual activists, affiliated or networked with larger organisations. There are international animal welfare and rescue organisations that work in South Korea too. What can we do? It is a big problem. We need your assistance in helping us to look after the dogs that have been rescued. They need to find great homes that will love them. A few years ago I spent a horrifying full day at South Korea’s BokNal dog meat festival, held on the main day of the three dog eating days, which tie in with the hottest days of summer. Moran Market is South Korea’s main dog and cat slaughterhouses and killing rooms, and the location for Korea’s main BokNal festival. The day was very busy, with around a thousand people, mainly men, gorging on plates of dog meat under huge marquee tents set up in the large car park. Many children were brought along too. It was a family day with a party atmosphere, filled with fun and laughter, which drowned out the screams of the dogs’ being slaughtered non-stop throughout the day, visible to party goers. I had already been undercover at Moran Market each day, for several hours a day, and  had managed to break the ice with several dog butchers. I was standing in the doorway of a killing room, talking to a dog butcher, when a sweaty man walked up and abruptly emptied a loaded wheelbarrow, with four large heavy sealed black plastic bags. As the wheelbarrow contents tipped out, one bag hit my leg and landed on my feet. I stood in horror as the contents of the bag was thrashed violently against my leg and on my feet. Each bag contained a live dog which was asphyxiating in front of me – on my feet! I had to fight not to vomit on the spot. Remember: I was standing inside a dog killing room with a dog butcher, and it was imperative I keep my cover, or I would suffer violence against me. The dog butcher pushed me to get my legs out from under the weight of the thrashing dogs, and I felt my own oxygen evaporating as I watched helplessly. The owner of the dogs was a local restaurant owner who needed these four dogs butchered on the spot. He had driven through Seoul with the live dogs in the trunk of his car, sealed in heavy plastic bags. I cannot put into words the rage which swept over me as I stood opposite this revolting human being. But to those around me, I smiled and nodded my head and kept my cover. The dog butcher swung into action, shouting, and workers appeared and threw the bags of dogs into another wheelbarrow and they were wheeled away to be slaughtered, meters from where I was standing. It was gut-wrenching to find out it was also “pet day. ” There were hundreds of pet dogs and cats for sale as meat dogs and cats, for immediate slaughter. These animals were clearly once-loved pets, most of them were pure-bred breeds but were now starving, traumatized and forlorn. It was horrifying! The “pets” were displayed in the full sun all day, with no shelter and no water or food. Thousands of people filed past, laughing and jeering at them. The hopelessness in the eyes of these animals will stay with me forever. I watched this puppy be flipped over and examined by a man with a young child, looking to buy a dog meat to raise and slaughter at home. I watched countless parents picking up puppies and examining them as you would examine an orange at a fruit stall. They were shopping for dog meat puppies, to raise and slaughter at home. They had young children with them who delighted in the puppies and kittens, as innocent children do. I watched in horror as a female cat vendor picked up two live kittens and literally threw them into a large trash bin, which was being guarded by a security man. When I deliberately tossed a small piece of paper into the same bin, to look inside it, I saw other live puppies and kittens who had already been thrown in, to bake in the sun and die. Their little legs still moving and wriggling. All of them would die a horrible death, baking in the sun. The security guard yelled at me to get back and go away. 15 mins later I made another excuse to have to go to the same trash bin to look again, but this time the guard angrily shouted at me. These animals had been thrown away because they had lost their perkiness, from baking in direct sunlight for several hours, without their mother’s milk. In all of my time working undercover in dog and cat slaughterhouses and killing rooms in different countries, this was the only time I had to walk away and pretend I had something in my eye, as I fought not to fall on the ground and howl. I pretended to have something in my eye to wipe away the tears which uncontrollably fell from my eyes. I could not allow my cover to be blown, as foreigners are not normally allowed into Moran Market. I only got ‘in’ because I acted like a dumb tourist who couldn’t understand what they were yelling at me on the fist day I went into Moran Market, and I shamelessly giggled my way into being allowed to stay. I spent a full week inside Moran Market and ended up being invited into the actual dog killing rooms (which I will write more on in further articles. ) Cats are the forgotten victims of the dog meat trade. South Korea has blistering heat in summer and sub-zero temperatures and deep snow in winter. Cats are often hated, seen as evil and suffer horribly. At Moran Market cats are boiled alive in large vats and made into (false) health food tonic drinks. Puppies which do not sell quickly are also boiled and made into elixir drinks, which are falsely marketed to boost a man’s libido. I saw this happen. In South Kora and everywhere else, cats are the forgotten victims of the dog meat trade. The date BokNal was supposed to take place, according to FaceBook posts, was incorrect. The actual BokNal festival was a day earlier than expected! Because I was going to Moran Market everyday, it was by accident that I found the main dog eating festival day was a day early. Anyone who went to Moran Market on the day of the FaceBook date would have found it to be empty. South Korea has a growing number of animal lovers and pet owners.  South Korea’s Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency reports that 21. 8% of households have household pets. The following not only applies to South Korea, but all dog and cat eating countries. The question which needs to be asked is “What is a pet? ” Prior to the BokNal festival day which I attended, I personally watched pet owners arrive at Moran Market and sell their own pet to dog butchers. I watched the exchange of cash and watched pet owners place their own pet inside the death cages, for slaughter. I personally know of a number of instances where South Korean families have eaten their own ‘once-loved’ family pet. On one occasion the dog had been the family pet, living inside the house for six years, and was taken to a picnic barbecue, the same as many people would take their pets to for a fun day out. As people milled around and enjoyed each others company, this particular family strung up and hung their own pet dog from a tree, then barbecued it and ate it. The family justified their actions by saying the dog was honored by being slaughtered in a beautiful setting. I have interviewed South Korean people who have said they played music while slaughtering their pet dog, so it died in a very nice setting, which to them justified their actions. I know many instances where children are given a puppy to play with for a few months, and one day the child comes home from school and is served that puppy for dinner, cooked as a stew for the family meal. This is not uncommon in South Korea. Outside one of the main slaughterhouses in Moran Market, because it was party day, BokNal, a vendor was selling toy dogs with a striking similarity to the South Korean “yellow dog” which is one of the main meat dogs bred on dog farms. They are a large dog, very docile in nature and sweet personality. These toy dogs were set up to show children how you could hang a toy dog at home, for fun. Just like the real thing. I bought this toy ‘hanging yellow dog’ outside a dog slaughterhouse, in Moran Market, during BokNal dog meat festival. The toy has a striking resemblance to the common yellow dogs of South Korea. Why do South Korean dog eaters believe dog meat “cools them down” in summer, when Chinese people eat dog meat to “warm them up” during winter? The South Korean signature dish “Boshintang” is an actual soup. I have seen large cauldrons of it being cooked, with dog heads and body parts swilling around in it. It is quite hideous to see a dog’s jaw bones pop up with the distinguishable rows of teeth still intact. But what is the secret to it cooling people down? Because boshtintang is a soup, it is made with a lot of liquid, so when a person consumes the soup they are ingesting large amounts of liquid, which hydrates them. This is no different than having a hot cup of tea on a hot day – the tea doesn’t cool you down, the hydration does! Consequently, dog soup hydrates people on a very hot day. It is wonderful that South Korea has a growing number of pet owners and strong animal activists who are helping educate new pet owners on responsible pet ownership and all forms of humane animal treatment, for all animals. This is the first time I have spoken about my time in South Korea and the BokNal festival. I will continue to publish more articles now that I have finally had the opportunity to speak about BokNal, which was traumatic as I worked to gather information inside South Korea’s dog and cat meat trade. Even those who regularly consume meat from chickens, sheep and pigs will often balk at the thought of eating a cuddly little bunny rabbit. But what’s the difference? Why do we see some animals as furry friends and others as fair game to chop up and eat? With the Winter Olympics turning attention towards South Korea, dog meat has been put on the media menu. The west has gone into shock mode. They eat dogs? They must be mad! But they do. Some of the same breeds we consider man’s best friend in England – labradors, beagles, chihuahuas – are eaten in South Korea. More than 30 million dogs are slaughtered each year for the Asian market and served up in dishes like dog salad and dog stew. As a vegan, this appals me. But no more than I’m appalled by people eating chickens and cows. Is there really such a difference? I sense some hypocrisy in the outrage, and perhaps a little dollop of racism (or at least xenophobia) on the side. The details of the dog meat trade are indeed horrific. Puppies are squeezed into excruciatingly cramped metal cages. They are left alone for most of their lives, yelping for help that never comes. Dog mess collects beneath the cages. Paws become torn and bloody as they struggle for firm footing on the hard wire they are supposed to stand on. Some of them collapse and die. The rest are sent to markets in even more cramped crates. Then they are killed. In other words, it’s much like what happens to pigs and many other animals in much of the west. In this context, the recent coverage of Korea’s dog meat industry amount to little more than the condemnation of foreigners for having their own food culture. ‘If you are a meat eater who is shocked by how dogs are treated in South Korea, maybe you should look at all meat production with fresh eyes. ’ Photograph: Yun Suk-Bong/Reuters CNN slammed the “brutal” and “sinister” trade, while USA Today described the scene at a dog farm, focusing in on the animals’ “ pitiful whines and yelps ”. The Mirror sent a reporter to write about the “hell” of dog farms, and trailed a follow-up story about “six lucky rescued pups being flown to the UK”. The Mail’s exposé showed readers the before-and-after of the process: first photos of terrified dogs huddled in cages, then photos of dog soup being cooked. Frightened animals being caged, killed and turned into food. If you are a meat eater who is shocked by how dogs are treated in South Korea, maybe you should look at all meat production with fresh eyes. CNN report that the dogs are “left alone in metal cages similar to chicken coops … and it’s all legal”. But 9 billion chickens are slaughtered for their meat each year in the US. Most of them are intensively farmed. Did you know that 93% of pigs killed for meat in the UK are factory-farmed, and 60% of sows reared here are kept in metal crates just centimetres bigger than their body? Farmers openly admit they cut off the pigs’ tails and clip or grind down their teeth without anaesthetic. In 2009, undercover researchers from the animal welfare group Animal Aid filmed UK slaughterhouse workers stubbing out cigarettes in pigs’ faces. Yes, dogs are smart and friendly – but so are pigs. Researchers from Cambridge University found pigs are as smart as three-year-old humans. They can play computer games and recognise people they met several years ago. They develop trust and empathy like we, and dogs, do. Few people relish the thought of any animals being slaughtered so it’s normal for those who eat meat to try to justify it. Just as westerners get angry about people in Asia eating dogs and cats, many Indians get outraged by westerners eating cows. People shake their heads in disbelief at guinea pigs and alpacas being served up in South America. But ultimately, what’s the moral difference in any of it? It simply can’t be the case that the slaughter of all animals is wrong – apart from the ones you want to feast on. Once you stop trying to convince yourself of that, a huge weight is lifted from your shoulders.
